Junior Counselors: (Tentative)

Evan Graves is a graduate of Lakewood HS. When he is not sailing he plays soccer, swims and plays tennis. He sails on a Thistle with Will Weible and Jamie Landsdowne. Will Weible is 18 years old and skipper of one of the Thistles here at CYC. Will’s boat placed second at Bay Week in 2008, and advanced to the Junior Sailing National Semi-Finals, where Will and his crew placed fourth. He will graduate this year from Lakewood HS where he plays hockey and tennis.

Bridget McNeil is 18 years old and will graduate from Westlake HS this Spring. She has been sailing all of her life and has been a part of sail camp for the past five years. Bridget is also a state-ranked track and field athlete and performs in the school band.

Tessa Endress started sailing when she was 8 at CYC sail camp. After competing at the advanced level, she took a year off, but missed camp so much she came back as a counselor last year. This Spring she will graduate from Lakewood HS where she plays soccer and runs track. She is also a black belt in Jujitsu which comes in handy when coaching Optis!

Charlie Yingling is a beast! He is on the wrestling team and plays in the marching band. He is skipper of the Thistle crew of Danielle Burns and Harris Bransch.

Tierney Bishop is finishing her sophomore year at Hathaway Brown School. She runs track and plays tennis for the Blazers. She sailed with CYC from the age of 8 and will return as a junior counselor this year. 

 

Power Boating/ Wake Boarding/Skiing/ Kayaking Instructors:(Tentative)

Emily Castelli –  This will be her third summer as a powerboat instructor at CYC. Emily lives in NYC and works in advertising, where she'll return in August. Emily competed professionally for three years wake boarding and has advanced experience teaching water skiing. We're thrilled to have Emily back at CYC this summer, she brings extraordinary deftness to our power boating program and a contagious positive enthusiasm to camp.

David Abbott – This will be his second year as a power boat instructor. He is from Grand Blanc HS in Michigan and will will graduate from High School this Spring. David is an exceptional lacrosse player and looks to have a future in the medical profession.

 Chris Milano is the Assistant Director-Powerboats and just finished his second year teaching and coaching for Westlake schools. He has been a counselor with sail camp for a record 8 years, four teaching sailing and three as a powerboat instructor. Before becoming an employee he sailed for CYC for 8 years. In addition to working for sail camp, he sails on his family boat at CYC every chance he can get. His goal: Show campers you don’t have to choose between power boating and sailing – it’s OK to love both!

Cassie Simmelink has been sailing for 12 years. She attended CYC sail camp for three years and then attended the Culver Summer Naval School for three years. This will be her fourth year as a full time counselor. She played varsity tennis for Avon Lake HS for four years and is attending Albion College.

Diana Merriam has been sailing all of her life. She is a graduate of Shaker Heights HS and is finishing her freshman year of engineering school at Duke. Diana attended sail camp at EYC and sailed on their race team. She also attended sail camp in Southwest Harbor, Maine and holds her US Sailing Level One Instructor certification.

 Catherine Fagnilli just graduated from Saint Joseph Academy and will be attending Ursuline College in the fall. She sailed in the Laser advanced fleet at CYC in her years before becoming a counselor. Catherine played golf in high school. She is majoring in biology for her undergraduate work.  

 

FJ-3 Instructors:(Tentative)

Tim Wilber will be a junior at the University of Dayton. He has been at camp for the past 9 years as a camper then counselor. He has also sailed on his family boat for the past 14 years. As a crew member for Jordon Gourash, he placed higher at Junior Bay week than any FJ in the last 15 years for CYC (up until last year!). His goal is to make FJ-3’s the most dominating fleet at camp, and he is well on his way to meeting that goal.

CJ Sideman is a second year instructor at CYC. He sailed for Edgewater Yacht Club and continued in the EYC race team this year. He has been sailing since he could walk! Currently he races 420’s and made the Junior National Semi-Finals this year. CJ also holds his US Sailing Level One Instructor certification.

Bobby O’Connor has been sailing at CYC since he was 8. He graduated from Shaker Heights High School and is in his freshman year at Wake Forest University.

Maggie O’Connor also starting sailing at age 8. She plays field hockey and lacrosse, but field hockey is her passion! She graduated from Shaker Heights HS and is finishing her freshman year at Columbia University. Maggie and Tessa won the Opti championship 9 years ago!

Patrick Whistler is in his third year of teaching FJ-2’s. He is from Ohio, attends the University of Dayton and has been sailing dinghies since age three. He has sailed in many regattas in Lasers, Optis, 420s and Lightning’s. He loves kids and works hard to make sail camp a fond memory for each camper. He is also a second generation counselor here at CYC.

 Chandler Salisbury is 18 and has been a part of sail camp for 10 years. She is will graduate from Hathaway Brown and plays soccer and runs track. She skippered Thistle crew Jack Hunger and Bobby O’Conner who took second place in the Junior Sailing National Semi-Finals in 2008. She obtained her US Sailing Level One Instructor certification at the beginning of last summer.  

 

Advanced Instructors:(tentative)

 

Picture Goes Here   Charlotte Bauer is a third year counselor at CYC and Thistle Race Team Coach, but she attended camp here for 8 years. She spent two summers with Vermillion Sail Club. She was a crew member on the boat that won the Thistle Fleet Championship at Bay week in 2005 and 2006, and that boat qualified for the Junior National Semi's and Sears Cup finals. She currently attends Wittenberg.

Julia Russell joined sail camp six seasons ago as the camp director. Her interest in sailing was acquired by cruising long weekends with her aunt and uncle on Lake Erie and later, by spending a month sailing with them in the South Pacific. Her proudest sailing moment was getting her Level 1 US Sailing Certification two summers ago. This will be her ninth summer sailing her own Hunter 28 on Lake Erie. Julia received her undergraduate degree at Ohio State University and Masters at Baldwin-Wallace College. She has been a mathematics teacher in Bay Village for 19 years, and coached numerous sports during that time.
